week 1

English
I will be putting up some English work for each day. Just like in lessons in school, there will usually be some reading to start with and then some work to follow up with about the text.

Often the task will be shown on a sheet but you do not need to print it off, instead you can just use it as an example of one way to complete the work.

I have chosen to set work based on stories that you may have read before or even have copies of the books at home, I hope you enjoy them.

Finally, some lessons will focus on either Spelling, Grammar or Punctuation. Sometimes it will be new learning, but mostly it will be revision of work that you have previously done.

I’m looking forwards to seeing your work and reading your emails.

Mrs Zdyrko

 Term 5 Week 1

Monday:

Read chapters 1 and 2 of Fantastic Mr Fox. The title uses alliteration, the words all start with the same sound. Have a go at writing some alliterative sentences linked to your name, eg I’m Mrs Zdyrko and I like zooming near zebras so I zip along to the zoo. Choose another member of your family and write alliterative sentences about the too, eg My Dad doesn’t like discos but he loves drawing donkeys. When it is dark he eats dragon soup with doritos. (It doesn’t have to be true, just be as alliterative as possible.)

When you have finished read your work carefully and check you have used capital letters for all names. Does each sentence start with a capital letter and finish with a full stop?

Challenge 1: Use a conjunction to extend each sentence by linking two ideas. I have put my conjunctions in bold.

Challenge 2: Learn a tongue twister and practise saying it as fast as you can, they are often tricky because they use lots of alliteration!

She sells sea shells on the seashore.

Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled pepper.

(If Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled pepper,

where’s the peck of pickled pepper that Peter Piper picked?)

Tuesday

Read chapter 3. Draw one of the farmers, use the pictures here to help you. Around the farmer write words to describe him, describe his appearance and what his personality is like. Underneath your picture and words write a paragraph about the farmer using some of your describing words to write interesting sentences about what he is like.

Challenge: use the conjunction because to link your idea to something in the text, eg He is mean because he tries to shoot Mr Fox.

Have a look at our work

Wednesday

Read chapter 4. Today is all about Mr Fox. Like yesterday start by drawing Mr Fox and writing words around the picture to describe him. Then write a paragraph about what he is like and prove it by using the information in the story, eg Mr Fox is clever because he sniffs the wind to smell the farmers.

Thursday

Read chapters 5 and 6. The farmers are determined to catch Mr Fox. Imagine you are either Boggis, Bunce or Bean. Use the example here to make a Wanted poster that you could put up in the village to help catch Mr Fox. Why do you want him caught? What would you offer as a reward? Add a picture of the fox.

Friday

Read the rest of the book today or over the weekend. Roald Dahl once said that he was particularly pleased with this story as he felt it had a good ending. Send me an email telling me if you like the story and particularly what you think of the ending. Happy reading!

Science

Parts of a flower

This week we are going to explore the different parts of a flower and then dissect one. If you can dissect a real flower, that would be great, buttercups work well. If you can’t find a flower to dissect, I’m including a paper one.

I would like you to:

 Maths

I hope you all had a lovely Easter - not too much chocolate I hope!

This week in maths we are carrying on with the topic of Fractions.

For each lesson there is a powerpoint which, as before, is really clear to follow with a voice that explains everything on the slide.

If you have any problems just email me at   s.lewis@helmdon.org   and I will help you as much as I can.

Each lesson should take you an hour - just like at school.

Times tables:  Please carry on practising your x3 x4 x8 times tables every day.

Ask an adult to test you.

Use TT Rockstars or Hit the Button to help you.  Learn the related division facts. Become a Rock Legend!!

Mathletics:I will be adding lots of activities but do not feel you have to complete all of them in one go!

Readiwriter: I will change the spellings for you to learn each Monday.  If you could ask someone to read out the list to test you on Fridays and email me your results that would be great.

Sometimes the woman's voice will tell you to pause the slides and answer some questions on the worksheet before you carry on listening.  For the independent activity (the worksheet), make sure you don't click 'Get the Answers' until you have finished all the questions.

To find your lesson do the following:

1. Click on the page link
