Week 2

English

For the next few weeks I am going to set you some work based on another Roald Dahl book: George’s Marvellous Medicine.

There is some reading to do most days and this may take a while and be the biggest part of the lesson. Ideally, I’d like you to read it aloud so that you can hear the wonderful language and rhythms that Roald Dahl uses.

Monday

Read Chapter 1 Grandma, and Chapter 2 The Marvellous Plan. We meet the 2 main characters in the story – George and his Grandma. Complete the sheet below to make notes about what we know so far, and then also make a prediction about what might happen.

Tuesday

Read Chapter 3 George Begins to Make the Medicine, and Ghapter 4 Animal Pills.

Look at this sentence: Although George was a small boy, he had big ideas.

This is a complex sentence because there are 2 ideas in this one sentence – George is small, he has big ideas.

The word ‘although’ is a conjunction and joins the 2 parts of the sentence together.

Complete the conjunctions sheet below.

Wednesday

Today we are going to focus on prefixes. A prefix is a string of letters that goes at the beginning of another word to change its meaning, so for example, if you put un at the beginning of tidy it becomes untidy.

Have a look at the attached sheet. The red letters at the top are prefixes and need to be matched up to the words below. Match them up in a list and then put at least one new word with each prefix in a sentence.

Challenge: use the same prefixes but add them to some other words. Put each new word you make in a sentence too to show that you know what it means. Which prefix makes the longest list?

Thursday

Read Chapter 5 The Cook Up and Chapter 6 The Brown Paint.  It’s more conjunctions today, you’re going to be an expert!

Use the sentence starts and conjunctions on the sheet to write some new complex sentences.

Friday

William Shakespeare was a very famous writer and it was his Birthday last week, he would have been 456 years old! When he was born King Henry 8th was on the throne of England!

Shakespeare wrote a famous play called Macbeth and in it some witches make a magic potion. Read their spell and then read again what George says when he plans his marvellous medicine in Chapter 2.

Your task is to write a short spell. List the ingredients that you would put in the potion and what you hope will happen.

Challenge: use some alliteration, eg manky mushrooms, best bits of beetles!

Science

Life cycle of a flowering plant - week 2

This week we are going to look at the life cycle of a flowering plant. There is a power point for you to look at with a video link.

We will do this over two weeks. The activity in the first week will be labelling and ordering  the life cycle of an apple tree.

The following week will be less prescriptive, you will have to wait and see!!!

Spellings

This week's spellings are now on Readiwriter for you to practise.

This week's spelling pattern is:

double the consonant and add -ing

Please use the Practise and Explore sections on Readiwriter to help you.

If you could ask someone to read out the list to test you on Fridays and email me your results that would be great.

Maths

Term 5 Week 2 - starting Monday 27th April

Hello Year 3,

This week in maths we are carrying on with the topic of Fractions – I hope you are finding the lessons easy to follow.

Like last week, for each lesson there is a powerpoint which is really clear to follow with a voice that explains everything on the slide.

If you have any problems just email me at   s.lewis@helmdon.org and I will help you as much as I can.

Each lesson should take you an hour - just like at school.

Times tables

Please carry on practising your x3 x4 x8 times tables every day.

Ask an adult to test you. Use TT Rockstars or Hit the Button to help you.  Learn the related division facts.

Mathletics:

I will be adding lots of activities but do not feel you have to complete all of them in one go!

Monday

Today we are looking at Equivalent Fractions.

Like before, there is a voice that explains everything on the slide. Sometimes the woman's voice will tell you to pause the slides and answer some questions on the worksheet before you carry on listening.  For the independent activity (the worksheet), make sure you don't click 'Get the Answers' until you have finished all the questions.

To find your lesson do the following:
